Peel Season is here. What you should know.

Peel season has officially entered the chat. It is probably my favorite time of year skincare wise, because the results I see from them are just next level. I am going to cover all the basics and give you an idea of what you can expect over the course of a treatment.

Peels, you may have heard of them, you may have not. You might have had one and it totally wrecked your face in the past and now you wouldn’t touch one with a ten foot pole. You might be interested because you have stubborn pigmentation. Here is what you should know about peels, and what you can expect.

First, not every person who comes to an esthetician is a candidate for every peel. There are various peels estheticians use in office (at the casa we use Sorella Apothecary, which are amazing) and an experienced esthetician should never be giving you a peel that is anything more than a gentle enzyme exfoliation if they have never treated your skin before. To get a heavier peel, it is important you have seen an esthetician who knows your skin and can customize one to address your concerns.

At casaBLANCA, if you came in and want a peel, the process would look something similar to this: depending on your skin type, and how long you had been a client, we would discuss your goals regarding your skin and what you hope to achieve. At that point we would reccomend one of our peel options (if you aren’t a candidate for a peel we can use enzymatic exfoliation, which is much gentler and can be done on new clients as well). Most heavier peels, where you would have significant peeling skin vs. light flaking require a home care regimen 2-4 weeks prior to receiving your peel. We want to be sure your skin is prepped correctly so that you can achieve the best results possible.

When it is time to get your peel, your esthetician will walk you through the process and what you should expect to feel activity wise during the treatment. Generally you are given a fan to hold to help cool the skin for comfort. Sorella Apothecary peels are self neutralizing so we do not remove them after the treatment. If you are a candidate, we can add a retinol booster post peel to help get even better results. This is then left on for anywhere from 4-8 hours, with the client removing it at home themselves later. The whole process is pretty quick!

Home care: depending on which peel your esthetician has given you, it will vary slightly. If you received a light peel, where you could just expect some flaking skin, we generally recommend using soothing skincare for the following 48-72 hours. You must wear SPF daily as well. If you have a stronger peel with more significant skin peeling, you will be recommended to purchase the Rehab Recovery Mask from Sorella to apply for a specified amount of time, followed by SPF. We always recommend using Sorella’s Orange You Jelly cleanser morning and night, as it is super gentle and won’t overly strip your skin. Your esthetician will give you an idea about the duration of the peel and how long you can expect until it has finished.

What a peel can address: peels help with collagen production, brightening the skin, can help clear acne, help reduce the appearance of fine lines, can help reduce post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and can help reduce the appearance of melasma. They are an amazing treatment and can be done as a one off, or in a series. Fall, Winter and Spring are great seasons to do peels because the UV index is naturally lower this time of year and helps reduce over exposing your sensitized skin and causing more UV damage.

I hope you speak with your esthetician to see if you’re a candidate!
